As the summer season is upon us most of us are thinking of ways to get that beach body in shape ready to dare and bare!
As such out come the exfoliators, razors, wax strips, fake bake and the sun shades… all in an effort to get glam and gorgeous!
It’s at this time too usually that lots of start to think how much easier it would be to not have the worry of shaving week in and week out and instead what a dream it would be to wake up every day like we were in the Venus adverts on TV! Well… there is a solution! However, I think its time to reflect on a few do’s and don’ts as the summer season is now upon us. To ensure you are able to have safe and effective hair removal treatment:
• DO stay out of the sun 4 weeks prior to and following a hair removal session. This is because if you expose the treated are to sunlight (be it the real deal or even sunbeds) you run the risk of your skin hyper or hypo pigmenting. This means it could leave you with dark or light patches – which aren’t conducive to that perfect beach bod!
• DO NOT apply fake tanning lotions or tinted moisturisers during the 4 weeks before and after each permanent hair removal session.
• DO tell your therapist if you have plans to go to the sun or indeed expose your skin to UVA or UVB light 4 weeks either side of your session so she/he can best inform you for the next actions in order to maintain your health and safety.
• DO NOT pluck or wax the hair to be treated prior to a session. This is because IPL and laser work by killing the hair at its root – if you remove the root: the treatment won’t work.
Adhering to the four simple guidelines will ensure you undergo safe and effective IPL or laser treatment and will ensure your hair free sun-sational beach bod for the coming year!

A Womans Thoughts on Male Hair Removal!

As a woman, and working in the profession I do: I am often asked, my thoughts on male hair removal, “who” does it, is it OK or indeed what are the common zones to remove the hair.
I have plenty of male friends who deem men as “men” and for that reason they choose to keep the hair in place on their body so as not to appear effeminate but there are on the other hand more and more men taking up the art of “manscaping” and indeed reaching for the scissors, trimmer or razor.
Hair is one of those things that over the years affects most of us in some way: some want it, some don’t, some trim it, some won’t.
When it comes to male hair removal though and from a consensus of most of my girl friends, there are 5 golden rules to how you want your man to keep on top of his grooming habits, I mean we don’t want them to simply “not care” – but then we still want to be the females in this relationship!
Here are my 5 top tips for male hair removal:
- Facial Hair is a plus sign! Women don’t want to date their younger brother who hasn’t quite yet hit puberty, so a man with a little facial stubble is deemed as a good thing.
- A man’s back should be smooth! Don’t be under any illusion that a hairy back is an added quirk or indeed we feel comfy snuggling up to it at night in place of our blanket! As a whole we like a man’s back to be smooth and defined, we don’t want that hairy rug to cover up one of a man’s sexiest bits!
- Johnson and the twins should get a little trim: this can be hard and some men aren’t sure how much or even how to trim. Remember that this is your crown jewels and although some men might do it for comfort, another popular reason is to trim the hedge in order to make the house look bigger. Whatever you choose you should do it because you’re comfy: but think of your partner too!
- Underarms should be hairy or well trimmed: women shave their underarms, men quite simply should not. Don’t get me wrong: we find it ok should you wish to have a good trim under there – there’s nothing wrong with taking pride! And come the summer months you won’t want to crack out the t-shirt and have a forest trying to escape its boundaries. But underarm grooming should be kept to a minimum.
- Legs and arms should be left natural: We appreciate that some professional sports personalities may need to shave these areas, but as a whole, most women accept the fact that men are the hairier of the species and as so we do still want to be reminded of that. Keeping arm and leg hair natural just enforces the Lynx affect as it were!

We often get asked if IPL is a suitable method for hair removal on the male genitalia or indeed directly on the shaft of the penis or testicles themselves.
Many men are conscious of hair growing directly on these areas. However, hair growth in these regions is as common to males as when women have (often unwanted) facial hair or nipple hair. Unfortunately though, IPL is not a suitable method of hair removal for this particular area.
This is partly because it uses intensed pulsed beams of light which turn into heat, and it is this heat that damages the hair follicle thus inhibiting its growth. As you can undoubtedly imagine this does involve some degree of discomfort, but if we were to depilate the male anatomy with IPL, this discomfort would be extremely heightened being such a sensitive area especially to heat and temperature change of this nature.
Although IPL would not be suitable for hair reduction or hair removal on the male genitalia, a method you may wish to consider for permanent hair removal for this region would be Electrolysis.
This involves an electric current being applied with a very fine needle-shaped electrode, or metal probe into each hair follicle to destroy the root, thus weakening each hair from the base and eventually eliminating growth altogether.
You should also remember that the type of hair that grows in the pubic zone, is generally coarser than hair that grows for example on the legs, this means it will be more deeply rooted, so will be more painful when removing. But some men may see this as a more suitable option as it would give permanent results, as the saying goes… “No pain no gain”. As with IPL this method is something that would need to be done over a period of time, in order to respect the time frame it takes for the new hair to grow back.
